SBS Transit, Univers develop AI platform for transport solutions

SBS Transit and Univers have entered a partnership to develop an AI-powered platform aimed at optimizing energy and operations across SBS Transit’s bus and rail facilities in Singapore.

Univers is a Singapore-based company that provides AI and IoT solutions for the energy sector.

The new platform will use Univers’ technology to connect and analyze data from SBS Transit’s assets, with the goal of improving how these systems are monitored and maintained.

Both companies said the collaboration is intended to enhance efficiency and support ongoing decarbonization initiatives.

The partnership will also involve Univers’ Global Impact AI Lab, which focuses on developing AI solutions for the transport sector that could later be scaled internationally.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Singapore’s bus fleet leaves little room for AI-only gains without big infrastructure changes

The collaboration covers bus operations.

  • Singapore had about 5,800 buses in December 2024, with only 1,140 expected electric by end-2027 after a 660-bus award 1, so over 80% stays non-electric and software cannot cut emissions.
  •  The 360 buses from the November 2023 tender cost S$166.4 million 2, or S$460,000 each, so charging optimization may stretch batteries and trim energy use but decarbonization still hinges on replacement.
  •  Singapore targets a cleaner-energy bus fleet by 2040, and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) plans to add more than 2,000 electric buses in five years 1. Missing data on SBS Transit’s energy per bus-kilometer and depot power use (depots are maintenance and charging yards) makes Univers’ impact unclear.

Electric bus charging tenders create openings for energy management vendors

  •  The Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded S$46.1 million of charging contracts for three depots in November 2023, split between a Shell consortium at S$31.3 million and Presico Engineering at S$14.8 million 2. These include smart charging with real-time diagnostics, so energy management is integrated.
  •  The 660-bus tender in 2025 will need charging for end-2027 deliveries 1, so AI vendors should engage before depot tenders since bundled offers pairing hardware with software can beat standalone tools.
  •  PT602 attracted 21 bidders including automotive manufacturers and new entrants 3. Providers differentiate by teaming with bus manufacturers or charger suppliers for bundled offers in LTA tenders, instead of direct deals with operators like SBS Transit post-build.
