SBI, Rakuten plan Japan crypto investment trusts
Japan’s SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities plan to launch crypto investment trusts after the Financial Services Agency finalizes rules for the products, as the country moves to regulate cryptocurrencies as financial products.
SBI Securities, part of SBI Group, and Rakuten Securities, a unit of Rakuten Group, would offer products including exchange-traded funds that let clients get crypto exposure through existing brokerage accounts.
In a Nikkei survey of 18 companies, 11 others including Nomura Securities, Daiwa Securities, and Mizuho Securities said they may enter the market after the regulatory process ends.
Japan approved a draft amendment in early April to place crypto under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, with the law potentially taking effect in fiscal 2027, while US spot bitcoin ETFs approved in January 2024 now hold more than US$100 billion in net assets.

- The regional contest is picking up. Hong Kong already offers spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds, while South Korea and Taiwan are moving ahead with their own rules 5.
- Large brokerages could pull more activity into their platforms by giving clients crypto exposure through existing accounts, which may pressure standalone crypto exchanges 1.
- Custodians, firms that hold assets for investors, will face tighter security requirements after breaches such as the 48.2 billion yen (US$304 million) DMM Bitcoin hack 5.
