SBI invests $50m in Startale to complete series A
Startale Group, a blockchain infrastructure firm, completed a US$63 million series A after adding US$50 million from Japan’s SBI Group to a US$13 million first close from Sony Innovation Fund.
The company works with SBI on Strium, a blockchain for tokenized securities and JPYSC, a stable coin, also co-develops the Soneium network with Sony Group Corporation.
CEO Sota Watanabe said Startale plans to push tokenized Japanese equities and a yen stablecoin this year.
The funding will go to scaling Strium, expanding JPYSC and USDSC stablecoins, and building its Startale App for tokenized assets and onchain services.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The funding supports a plan to make crypto easier to use
- Startale is taking a vertical integration route. It wants control from the base blockchain networks it helps build through the Startale App, which offers access to tokenized assets and onchain services 1.
- The setup targets the “connection cost” of a split market. Moving assets across blockchains can raise hack risk, while clunky wallet flows can push away mainstream users 1.
- Startale compares the approach to Tesla, which links batteries, software, and a charging network. Startale plans to bundle blockchains such as Soneium and Strium with its stablecoins, including the yen stablecoin it calls JPYSC, plus a “super-app” wallet called the Startale App 1.
- The structure also gives Startale room to move revenue around the stack. It can price one layer low to bring people in, then earn from other parts of the ecosystem 1.
Startale frames the work as regulated digital finance in Japan, with SBI as a main partner
- Startale’s projects track Japan’s national policy. The government has set 2026 as “Digital Year One” and is working on a “Tokenization Act” to regulate the sector 2.
- SBI Group is working on tokenized securities through Strium, which Startale calls blockchain infrastructure for tokenized securities 2.
- JPYSC is set up as a regulated “Type III Electronic Payment Instrument.” Shinsei Trust & Banking plans to issue it, SBI VC Trade will serve as the main distribution partner, and Startale Group will lead technical development 3.
- Startale also describes a longer-term goal where AI agents take part in markets, run transactions, and manage tokenized assets onchain 4.
