Saudi wealth fund boosts EV maker Lucid investment by $550m
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is increasing its investment in EV maker Lucid by buying US$550 million in convertible preferred stock through its subsidiary, Ayar Third Investment Company.
The funding comes as Lucid expands its robotaxi plans.
Uber also committed another US$200 million and will increase its purchase commitment to at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles.
PIF is a long-term strategic investor, and the new funding is expected to boost Lucid’s financial position as it looks to expand its fleet of robotaxis.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The robotaxi plan is a three-way partnership with a specific timeline
- Lucid’s robotaxi effort builds on a partnership with Nuro, an autonomous driving technology company, announced in July 2025 1.
- The companies aim for a commercial launch of their next-generation robotaxi service later in 2026, beginning in the San Francisco Bay Area and using the Lucid Gravity SUV at the start 1.
- Uber’s latest US$200 million investment lifts its total investment in Lucid to US$500 million, marking a closer relationship than a vehicle purchase deal alone 1.
- Uber also committed to buy at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles built exclusively for its future global robotaxi service 1.
Lucid’s pivot signals a new blueprint for the autonomous vehicle industry
- The agreement supports Lucid’s move toward serving business fleet operators as a vehicle and technology platform, backed by added funding from Ayar Third Investment Company, an affiliate of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) 1.
- The setup splits roles across three companies, with Lucid making vehicles, Nuro supplying autonomous driving systems, and Uber providing the ride-hailing network 1.
- This modular model offers another route besides the vertically integrated approach used by competitors like Tesla 1.
- Lucid’s stock rose 10.39% in pre-market trading after the announcement, and the reaction suggests investors see fleet supply as a more believable way to scale than fighting for share in the luxury EV consumer market 2.
