Saudi Arabia to launch AI venture fund to back 25 startups

Red Sea Global and Bunat Ventures plan to launch a venture fund targeting AI-driven startups in Saudi Arabia.

The fund will focus on early- and growth-stage startups that use AI at the core of their business and aims to invest in about 25 startups over the next three years.

It will prioritize companies founded in Saudi Arabia or expanding into the country.

In addition to funding, the program will give startups access to infrastructure and opportunities to test their technologies within Red Sea Global’s operations.

The initiative is intended to promote local innovation and attract global tech talent to Saudi Arabia.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Fund details remain undisclosed

  • Missing pieces include total fund size, target check sizes (typical amount per investment) and Saudi Capital Markets Authority (CMA) approval. The fund has not shared limited partner (LP) makeup or Saudi Capital Markets Authority (CMA) authorization. That leaves founders, prospective LPs and co-investors unable to judge if it is fresh capital or repackaged commitments from Red Sea Global’s Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund 1.
  • Saudi Arabia’s AI investing is fragmented as Wa’ed Ventures (a Saudi venture investor) set aside $100 million of its $500 million fund for AI in 2024, a move that aligns with caution despite government rhetoric 1.
  • A three-year plan for 25 investments implies about eight deals each year, a pace that needs a pre-screened pipeline, yet no co-investment partners or scout networks (informal deal finders) are named 1.

Red Sea Global pilots and procurement can speed enterprise sales

  • Red Sea Global runs 10 resorts and an international airport where investee startups can pilot technology for a customer-as-investor validation path, with deployment openings in computer vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP) or predictive analytics 1.
  • Its procurement team includes professionals trained in International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) contract management and Six Sigma quality-improvement methodologies, creating structured vendor onboarding that AI startups can target 2.
  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) plus AI infrastructure providers that do not seek equity can join Red Sea Global’s procurement roadshows in Seoul as entry into Saudi regenerative tourism sector (projects designed to restore local ecosystems and communities) 3.
