Saudi Arabia launches state-backed AI firm Humain

Saudi Arabia has launched a new AI company called Humain, owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Humain will develop advanced AI models, especially in Arabic, and build next-gen data centers and cloud infrastructure.

The company aims to drive AI adoption across sectors like energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and finance.

Led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Humain supports Saudi Arabia’s plan to grow its AI ecosystem through investments and global partnerships.

This initiative builds on Saudi Arabia’s top ranking in government AI strategy and aims to boost local innovation and global tech leadership.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Saudi Arabia’s AI ambitions build on years of strategic investment

The launch of HUMAIN isn’t an isolated event but part of an extensive strategy dating back several years within Vision 2030.

Saudi Arabia has already invested $3 billion in AI infrastructure to establish early leadership in the space 1, with plans to expand this investment significantly through a $100 billion commitment to AI infrastructure, startups, and workforce training 2.

This pattern of increasing AI investment aligns with economic projections showing AI could contribute $135.2 billion to Saudi Arabia’s economy by 2030, representing 12.4% of its GDP 3.

The creation of HUMAIN follows the earlier establishment of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), demonstrating a consistent approach to centralizing and accelerating AI development 2.

Saudi Arabia’s first-place ranking in government AI strategy on the 2024 Global AI Index provides external validation of these coordinated efforts, showing the kingdom’s systematic approach to building AI capabilities.

2️⃣ Arabic language AI presents both unique challenges and opportunities

HUMAIN’s focus on developing Arabic language LLMs addresses a significant gap in the global AI landscape where most development has centered on English and other European languages.

Arabic, as the fifth most spoken language globally with over 400 million speakers across more than 20 countries, represents an underserved market with substantial economic potential for localized AI solutions 4.
