SAP invests in automation startup n8n at $5.2b
Germany’s SAP said it has invested in Berlin-based workflow automation startup n8n through a secondary share sale.
The company also signed a multiyear deal to add n8n tools to its Joule Studio AI builder as it expands its AI products.
The deal values n8n at US$5.2 billion and lets some early investors sell shares, according to CEO Jan Oberhauser.
Founded in 2019, n8n sells software that helps businesses automate tasks with little coding and build AI agents using models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Oberhauser said n8n was valued at US$2.5 billion in October and now has more than 100 million euros (US$118 million) in annual recurring revenue.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
n8n’s developer model helped lift its valuation
- Before reaching a reported US$5.2 billion valuation, n8n grew to more than 230,000 active users with a freemium open-source model. Software developers can self-host it for free for internal use 1.
- That approach fed paid plans. Sacra estimates n8n has more than 3,000 enterprise customers, including Microsoft and Vodafone, the UK-based telecoms company 1.
- n8n does not charge by step or seat. It prices by full workflow executions, so customers pay when an automated workflow runs from start to finish, no matter how many steps it has 2.
- Sacra estimates revenue is about 55% cloud subscriptions, 30% enterprise licenses, and the remainder from embedded original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partnerships 1.
The SAP partnership sets up embedded AI agent orchestration
- The deal centers on infrastructure for complex AI agents, not simple task automation.
- SAP positions Joule Studio as a development environment built for AI agents, apps, and workflows. It includes governance and managed runtime features for enterprise use 3.
- With n8n embedded, software developers would get access to more than 500 integrations that connect workflows across business systems and AI agents 1.
- The partnership could raise pressure on Workato, a business automation software company, and UiPath, an automation software maker. Workflow automation inside an AI development suite could shift competition toward platform suites over standalone tools 1.
