Samsung’s Q1 2025 chip profit hits $767m, surpasses forecasts
Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor division reported an operating profit of 1.1 trillion won (US$767 million) for Q1 2025, surpassing forecasts.
Revenue reached 25.1 trillion won (US$17.56 billion), in line with market estimates.
The growth was driven by higher demand for PC memory and smartphones, particularly from Apple and Lenovo, who increased shipments to the US in anticipation of potential tariffs.
Sales of the Galaxy S25 also boosted results, though analysts are concerned about the sustainability of this demand.
In the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) segment, Samsung faces challenges, including delays in approval for advanced HBM products from Nvidia.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Semiconductor industry’s uneven recovery driven by stockpiling effects
The surge in Samsung’s chip profits reflects a broader market trend where demand is being artificially accelerated by trade tensions.
While the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization forecasts 19% growth for the semiconductor market in 2024 with the Memory segment soaring by 81%, these figures are being influenced by inventory stockpiling behaviors1.
Chinese customers rushing to secure supplies before tariff implementation follows a pattern seen throughout the industry, as the U.S. has escalated tariffs on Chinese imports while China has only recently eliminated similar retaliatory tariffs on U.S. semiconductor products2.
This dynamic creates a temporary demand spike that may not reflect sustainable consumption patterns, potentially leading to inventory corrections later in 2025 after the current rush to avoid tariffs subsides.
The semiconductor memory market specifically, valued at $111.62 billion in 2023, faces these uneven demand patterns despite its projected 11.6% compound annual growth rate through 20303.
2️⃣ Memory market rebound overshadows Samsung’s foundry struggles
Samsung’s recovery in memory chips masks its persistent challenges in the higher-margin contract chipmaking business.
In Q1 2024, Samsung maintained its position as the overall semiconductor market leader primarily due to strong demand for memory products, particularly DDR5, while its foundry business continues to underperform4.
