Samsung workers vote on AI chip bonus deal
Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics began voting on May 22 on a tentative wage deal.
The agreement was reached out shortly before an 18-day strike was due to start.
The deal needs support from a majority of voters after at least half of eligible members take part.
It follows months of deadlock over performance bonuses linked to Samsung’s AI chip business.
Samsung proposed a special chip bonus equal to 10.5% of business performance earnings.
The payout would be distributed in company stock over at least 10 years if the division meets profit targets.
Forty percent of the pool would go to the division overall and 60 percent to individual units, while a decision on payouts for loss-making divisions was deferred for a year.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung’s proposed bonus follows bitter negotiations over pay disparity
- The union’s acceptance of a 10.5% bonus pool marks a compromise from its opening demand for 15% of the semiconductor division’s operating profit 1.
- The dispute gained force because SK hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker, guaranteed annual bonuses that could reach US$900,000 next year. Samsung’s proposal falls short of that level 1.
- The main fight centered on timing. The union wanted a guaranteed yearly profit share, while management wanted a one-time payment 1.
- The proposed stock payout over at least 10 years serves as a middle ground between recurring pay and a single award.
The AI boom risks creating a two-tiered workforce at Samsung
- Samsung’s chip business sits inside a wider company where units such as mobile and home appliances are under pressure, unlike SK hynix 1.
- Those divisions face thinner margins as rising memory costs lift chip profits, which adds to internal strain 2.
- The gap has already caused friction, with a smaller Samsung union for smartphone and TV workers pulling out of a planned joint strike over bonus fairness 1.
- In the first half of 2025, Samsung’s memory unit got a bonus equal to 25% of base salary. Its foundry unit, which makes chips for outside customers, got nothing, leaving a sharp divide that may intensify the race for talent 3.
