Samsung union backs strike that could hit chip supply
Samsung Electronics’ unionized workers in South Korea authorized a potential strike after 93% of 66,019 ballots backed the plan.
The unions said they represented a majority of Samsung’s workforce and could strike for 18 days from May 21 if no deal is reached.
The union said it wanted Samsung to lift a bonus cap and link its bonus pool to operating profit.
Samsung said lifting the cap would make it harder to fund future investments and shareholder returns.
A strike could worsen global semiconductor bottlenecks amid strong demand for AI data centers.
Samsung produces all its DRAM and about two-thirds of its NAND chips in South Korea.
Heungkuk Securities analyst Sohn In-joon said removing the bonus cap could widen pay gaps.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung’s labor dispute is fueled by a rival’s generous bonus policy
- SK hynix scrapped its bonus cap and will pay bonuses worth 10% of operating profit, shaping the union’s requests 1.
- Most pressure comes from Samsung’s chip unit. The Device Solutions (DS) division makes up about 78% of members in the cross-company union cited 1.
- Management offered options for bonus formulas, either 20% of economic value added or 10% of operating profit, while keeping the 50% of salary cap 2.
A strike could complicate Samsung’s efforts to ramp memory production
- A work stoppage risks slowing Samsung’s cycle-proof investment approach. The company has kept memory capital spending high even when others cut or delay fab ramps 3.
- Any halt would land as Samsung speeds advanced DRAM output at its domestic P4 and P5 fabs (semiconductor factories), with U.S. export controls raising worries about China-linked operations 4.
- The standoff adds a weak spot for global tech supply. Local labor disputes at manufacturing hubs can become single points of failure that ripple through supply chains 5.
