Samsung to start HBM4 output, targets Nvidia supply: sources

Samsung Electronics plans to begin production of its HBM4 memory chips next month, with supply expected to Nvidia, according to industry sources.

Samsung reportedly passed qualification tests for HBM4 with Nvidia and AMD.

Nvidia’s CEO has announced that its next-generation Vera Rubin chips, designed to work with HBM4, are in full production ahead of a planned launch later this year.

Neither Samsung nor Nvidia have officially confirmed the supply plans.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung’s reported HBM4 timeline vs. broader HBM4 ramp expectations

  • The claim that Samsung will start HBM4 production next month for Nvidia should be checked. Across suppliers, HBM4 mass production is expected no earlier than the end of 1Q 2026. The start is most likely between late 1Q 2026 and early 2Q 2026, according to TrendForce (a market research firm that tracks the semiconductor supply chain) 1.
  • The slower HBM4 ramp has been linked by TrendForce to Nvidia revising Rubin’s HBM4 specifications in 3Q 2025. The required per-pin speed was raised to above 11 Gbps (gigabits per second), so designs had to be changed. Samples had to be resubmitted 1.
  • Samsung’s qualification status should be treated as unsettled in this context. Samsung is viewed by TrendForce as the leading candidate to qualify first, yet designs are still being refined after sample resubmissions 21. Separate TrendForce-cited reporting says paid final HBM4 samples were delivered by Samsung and SK Hynix to Nvidia. Quality qualification is still the hurdle before volumes and pricing are set in 1Q 2026 2.

Nvidia Rubin availability sets timelines for infrastructure vendors

  • Data center operators and investors can plan around the HBM4-driven refresh cycle.
  • CRN (a U.S. tech industry publication) reports that partner systems based on Nvidia’s Rubin platform should arrive in the second half of 2026 3.
  • Rack designs aim for 600 kW by 2027. That shift sets up a multi-year run of upgrades in higher-capacity power delivery plus cooling systems 4.
