Samsung Texas relocation to affect 739 New Jersey roles
Samsung Electronics said the move of Samsung Electronics America, its US consumer electronics unit, to Texas affected 739 roles in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. About 100 workers were also let go at Samsung’s Plano, Texas, office.
The company recently told staff it planned to move the headquarters to Plano and complete the relocation within the year.
The move comes about a year after Samsung moved its US base from Ridgefield Park to Englewood Cliffs.
Industry observers said the move could improve coordination across Samsung’s US businesses. Texas also offers lower real estate costs and lower business taxes.
The relocation adds to Samsung’s Texas footprint, which includes a chip plant in Austin and a Taylor semiconductor project with an initial US$17 billion investment.
Samsung recently forecast a 19x rise in second-quarter profit, driven by AI memory chips.
In New Jersey, large relocation-linked layoffs can require notice and mandate severance under the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification law.
