Samsung strike may disrupt chip supply confidence

Samsung Electronics could face more than a short production hit if unions proceed with a general strike from May 21 to June 7, as a University of Seoul economics professor warned that chip output disruptions could weaken customer trust and supply reliability.

At a recent seminar, professor Song Heon-jae said a shutdown could cost Samsung about 1 trillion won (US$677 million) a day and cut chip operating profit by up to 10 trillion won (US$6.8 billion) if the strike drags on.

A joint union committee said a rally by about 40,000 members at Samsung’s Pyeongtaek chip complex disrupted overnight shifts, with output falling 18.4% at memory fabs and 58.1% at foundry fabs.

The unions want more transparency on bonuses, removal of a cap that limits performance pay to 50% of annual salary, and a pledge to reserve 15% of operating profit for the bonus pool.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The dispute centers on competition with SK hynix

  • The union compares Samsung with SK hynix, a South Korean memory chip maker. SK hynix workers get a performance bonus equal to 10% of operating profit, and the company no longer caps that payout 1.
  • The union says Samsung staff receive less than 30% of the bonus paid at SK hynix, even though Samsung has a larger market capitalization, or total stock market value 1.
  • The pay gap may be pushing people to leave. Around 200 Samsung employees moved to SK hynix over the past four months 2.

The strike could hurt Samsung’s push to win foundry orders from TSMC

  • The threat adds pressure to Samsung Foundry, Samsung’s contract chip manufacturing business. Some customers have discussed it as an option while TSMC faces limited supply 3.
  • Meta, Qualcomm, and AMD have come up as possible Samsung Foundry customers in that setting, though no orders have been confirmed 3.
  • A long shutdown could make Samsung look less steady. It could also add to a shift already seen at FuriosaAI and DeepX, two South Korean AI chip startups, which reportedly moved next-generation designs to TSMC 4.
