Samsung, SK hynix warned of chip supply risk from Hormuz
Japanese photoresist suppliers have warned Samsung Electronics and SK hynix of possible raw material disruptions after the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed in early March.
The risk comes from tighter naphtha supply because the oil feedstock is used to make specialty chemicals for photoresist, a material used in chipmaking.
The strain could be most severe for advanced chips made with extreme ultraviolet lithography because the process has tighter material tolerances.

A 92% price spike in one oil product exposes a supply chain bottleneck
- The bottleneck comes from solvent shortages rather than photoresist itself. The tightest supplies are propylene glycol methyl ether (PGME) and propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) 1.
- After the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed in early March, spot prices for Japanese naphtha, the oil-based feedstock for those solvents, nearly doubled to US$1,190 per ton. That forced six of Japan’s 12 naphtha cracking centers to cut output 1.
- The pressure reaches far beyond one chemical niche because Japan holds more than 70% of the global photoresist market 2.
How a year-long approval process can freeze chip supply chains
- The episode exposes a weak spot in Japan’s industrial model. Chemical suppliers usually prefer domestic inputs, which works until one upstream material is disrupted 1.
- Photoresist makers in Japan cannot quickly switch to solvent suppliers in South Korea or China. The domestic chemical network depends on the same feedstock, and any swap brings qualification and process hurdles 1.
- Chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix must requalify any raw material change. That process usually takes about a year, and longer for the most advanced production lines, which leaves little room for a short-term fix 1.
