Samsung, SK hynix surpass Chinese tech giants on AI chip boom
South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have reached a combined market value of US$1.1 trillion, surpassing the valuation of Chinese internet giants Alibaba and Tencent, according to Bloomberg.
The rise reflects strong investor interest in the AI supply chain, driven by hyperscale demand for HBM and shortage of DRAM and NAND chips that have strengthened pricing power for Korean firms.
Shares of Samsung and SK Hynix have increased by around 34% and 37% this year, respectively, while Alibaba’s stock has risen around 14%, and Tencent’s remains flat.
Analysts note that Korea’s focus on hardware components contrasts with China’s broader efforts to develop an end-to-end AI ecosystem amid US export restrictions.
