Samsung, SK Hynix shares fall before earnings on AI doubts

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are due to report third-quarter earnings on October 28–29. As of October 23, their shares had fallen 24.5% and 31.4%, respectively, over the past month.

Strong quarterly results are expected. TrendForce said AI server demand is sustaining memory contract prices, while high-bandwidth memory (HBM) supply remains constrained.

Investors are questioning whether AI data-center spending can sustain the two chipmakers’ profits beyond 2027, while capital spending by hyperscalers faces growing scrutiny.

China-related risks also loom. Samsung and SK Hynix’s operations in China received annual US approvals for chipmaking tool shipments, offering temporary relief as access to equipment still depends on US licensing.

Chinese memory makers are ramping capacity, though TrendForce said domestic AI and cloud demand in China may absorb much of the new supply through 2027.
