Samsung, SK hynix profit forecasts surge on memory shortage
Operating profit forecasts for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have surged in recent months as memory shortages push selling prices above published benchmarks.
Samsung’s FnGuide consensus for second-quarter operating profit rose from 47.85 trillion won (US$31.3 billion) three months ago to 87.15 trillion won (US$57 billion)
The consensus forecast for third-quarter operating profit also increased from 55.52 trillion won (US$36.3 billion) to 104.31 trillion won (US$68.2 billion).
SK Hynix saw a similar revision. Its third-quarter operating profit consensus rose from 45.16 trillion won (US$29.5 billion) three months ago to 75.89 trillion won (US$49.6 billion).
That gap can widen in tight markets because benchmark quotes may not fully capture higher-priced contracts and allocation deals.
TrendForce said suppliers were reallocating capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server applications.
The research firm also said cloud service providers were signing long-term supply agreements (LTAs) agreements at higher prices to secure supply.
TrendForce also said memory suppliers were prioritising server dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) because it was more profitable, suggesting limited near-term relief for broader DRAM and NAND supply.
