Samsung, SK hynix cash reserves rise to $197b

South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix said cash, cash equivalents, and short-term financial products totaled 277.9 trillion won (US$197 billion) at the end of the first half.

The amount was up about 117 trillion won (US$83.1 billion) from the end of 2025, according to their semiannual reports.

Samsung’s total rose to 190 trillion won (US$135 billion) from 125.8 trillion won (US$89.3 billion), while SK hynix’s increased to 88 trillion won (US$62.5 billion) from 34.9 trillion won (US$24.8 billion).

SK hynix also said its borrowings fell to 18.6 trillion won (US$13.2 billion).

The increase was driven by stronger earnings in memory semiconductors.

Samsung spent 28.1 trillion won (US$20 billion) on facilities in the first half.

SK hynix is building the first-phase fab in the Yongin semiconductor cluster and plans to invest in a second Yongin fab and its Cheongju NAND base M17.
