Samsung sees Q1 profit surge on AI chip demand
Samsung Electronics said on April 7 it expects Q1 operating profit to surge to 57.2 trillion won (US$37.8 billion), as AI infrastructure demand tightened chip supply and pushed prices higher.
The forecast beat an LSEG SmartEstimate of 40.6 trillion won (US$26.8 billion) and was up from 6.7 trillion won (US$4.42 billion) a year earlier, while revenue was seen rising 68% to 133 trillion won (US$87.8 billion).
Samsung shares rose 4.6% in early trade, and analyst Kim Sunwoo of Meritz Securities estimated the chip unit contributed about 54 trillion won (US$35.6 billion) of operating profit as customers anticipated further price rises, while TrendForce expects DRAM contract prices to climb more than 50% this quarter.
