Samsung seeks 20% DRAM price hike in Q3

Samsung Electronics is negotiating with customers to raise third-quarter prices for general-purpose dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and low-power DRAM (LPDDR), according to a July 3 report.

The company is seeking a 20% quarter-on-quarter increase for general-purpose DRAM and more than 20% for LPDDR as tight memory supply continues to pressure buyers.

LPDDR is mainly used in smartphones, but it is also used in AI (AI) data-center accelerator cards because it supports easier 3D stacking, higher memory capacity per card, and competitive costs.

TrendForce said DRAM contract prices continue to rise, and its third-quarter forecast of 13% to 18% quarter-on-quarter gains suggests Samsung’s proposed increase is above the broader market.

TrendForce also said some buyers’ procurement prices are capped by long-term agreement provisions, which could limit how much of Samsung’s proposed increase customers accept.

Samsung Electronics shares rose more than 8%, and SK hynix gained over 12% in South Korea after the report.
