Samsung SDS secures rights to sell OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu

Samsung SDS is the South Korean IT services arm of Samsung Group and said on April 27 that it secured rights to sell OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu.

It is running a proof of concept with the National Korea Broadcasting and Communications University for about 90,000 students, professors, and staff.

OpenAI says the product keeps teacher and student chats out of training data and offers tools for writing, coding, analysis, web browsing, summaries, and custom chatbots.

The move follows a reseller partnership signed in December 2025.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Edu is also used by Oxford, the University of London, Wharton, and the National University of Singapore.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This tie-up reaches beyond the classroom

  • The reseller agreement sits within a broader letter of intent (LOI), a preliminary agreement on planned cooperation, involving Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, Samsung Group’s construction and trading arm, Samsung Heavy Industries, the group’s shipbuilding unit, and OpenAI 1.
  • Under that LOI, Samsung Electronics would supply advanced semiconductor solutions as a memory partner for OpenAI’s Stargate project, an AI infrastructure build-out, where memory demand could reach 900,000 Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) wafers a month 1.
  • Samsung SDS also has a role beyond resale, with plans under the LOI to work with OpenAI on the design, development, and operation of Stargate AI data centers 1.
  • The education agreement builds on Samsung SDS becoming OpenAI’s first official reseller partner for ChatGPT Enterprise in Korea in December 2025, after which it said it had won more than 10 enterprise customers across industries 2.

A path for AI growth in education and other sectors

  • Samsung’s move into education aims at a focused slice of the Asia-Pacific generative AI market, which Grand View Research valued at US$4.25 billion in 2023 and expects to reach US$37.55 billion by 2030 3.
  • Market Intelo expects the global generative AI in education market to hit US$14.2 billion by 2033, with Asia Pacific growing the fastest 4.
  • That approach pairs a global AI developer with a local IT services firm, offering a model for sectors such as finance and manufacturing 5.
  • For companies like OpenAI, local partners can handle deployment support, consulting, and security work tied to local implementation needs 6.
