Samsung SDI secures US battery deal, Tesla link speculated
Samsung SDI’s U.S. division has secured a battery supply contract, though specific details remain undisclosed, according to the company on January 30.
The deal is believed to be connected to Tesla’s energy storage system (ESS) business, but Samsung SDI stated it would not reveal further information until January 2030.
A prior regulatory filing in November 2025 suggested ongoing discussions with Tesla regarding battery supply agreements, including a potential deal worth around 3 trillion won (US$2.1 billion).
Industry observers note the demand for ESS is increasing, partly driven by growth in the artificial intelligence sector, and that Samsung SDI appears to be securing contracts based on performance, safety, and pricing.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Key contract details must be verified to gauge true impact
- The contract’s cell chemistry, form factor, counterparty, and production location need to be confirmed. The agreement’s terms are being kept confidential for business reasons, and further disclosure will be withheld until January 2030, according to Samsung SDI. Samsung SDI has said Samsung Battery Box 2.0 is being prepared for the U.S. market, based on prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and LFP lines are planned with mass production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 1.
- The start-of-supply date and total capacity also need to be confirmed. Samsung SDI America, its Michigan-based subsidiary, said a three-year deal was signed with a U.S. customer to supply prismatic LFP cells for energy storage systems (ESS) starting from 2027. The contract value was described as “well in excess of KRW 2 trillion,” and the batteries are to be manufactured at its U.S. manufacturing facility 2.
- Once these terms are confirmed, eligibility for U.S. production tax credits can be assessed. The same information is needed to judge whether Samsung SDI can replace or supplement current battery suppliers for large ESS buyers, which affects the deal’s market footprint.
AI-driven energy demand creates openings for ecosystem players
- Operators and investors can read rising ESS demand as a market cue. Samsung SDI management tied ESS growth to U.S. utility demand, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) demand, and higher power use from AI data centers 3.
- More public sector and utility procurement is following, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which are grid-scale battery installations used to store and discharge electricity. Samsung SDI said it won most deals in a large government-led ESS supply project 1.
- By tracking open solicitations, engineering firms, energy management software providers, and battery-component vendors can shape bid lists and pursue work created by this growing market.
