Samsung SDI, a South Korean battery maker, said on August 11 that it had partnered with General Motors.

The companies signed a joint development agreement to develop prismatic batteries for GM’s next-generation electric vehicle models.

Samsung SDI also said it would acquire GM’s 49.99% stake in Synergy Cells, a US$3.5 billion joint venture the companies set up in 2024 to build a battery plant in the US, giving Samsung SDI full control.

The company said the decision was meant to continue the companies’ work on future mobility and meet rising US demand for energy storage systems.

The Indiana plant is still under construction and is designed to produce more than 30 gigawatt hours a year.

Samsung SDI said the start of commercial operations at the facility has yet to be decided.
