🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung retakes the overall DRAM lead, but the AI memory battle is centered on HBM
- Samsung took back the top spot in overall DRAM in Q4 2025, yet the bigger fight sits in high-margin AI memory such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
- SK hynix leads HBM, more than doubling HBM revenue year-on-year in FY 2025 and posting a 58% operating margin in Q4 FY 2025 1.
- Its edge comes partly from a tight Nvidia relationship and a faster ramp of HBM3E, an advanced generation of HBM used in AI accelerators, specialized chips that speed up AI model training and inference 2, 1.
- Samsung has trailed in HBM and, as of late 2024, still had not finished Nvidia’s qualification process to become an approved HBM supplier 2.
Memory makers are checking for customer hoarding to reduce risk in a tight market
- AI demand is pushing memory makers to pour money into new factories and packaging capacity to raise supply over time 3.
- Suppliers want to avoid a repeat of the post-pandemic slump, when overbooking and stockpiling helped trigger a sharp drop in orders and revenue 3.
- Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron are each reviewing customer orders to curb chip hoarding, which can create artificial demand 3.
- They say the checks can steady a cyclical market and keep long-term capacity plans on track, though some device prices could rise sooner 3.
