Samsung, Qualcomm discuss broader 2nm chipmaking deal
Samsung Electronics’ foundry business and Qualcomm are reportedly discussing a broader 2nm chip manufacturing partnership ahead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 22.
The companies are negotiating specifications, pricing, and process optimization.
Qualcomm could still split production between Samsung and TSMC, following earlier reports that it was considering a dual-sourcing strategy for future Snapdragon chips.
The talks come as Samsung’s 2nm process seems to be improving.
One April report put yields at about 55%. Another later said yields were inching towards mass production. A separate report said Samsung had passed hurdles in making Qualcomm’s 2nm chips, though pricing remained unresolved.
TSMC is still seen as ahead on yield and performance. Samsung’s chances may also depend on supply, with Apple reportedly securing more than half of TSMC’s early 2nm production capacity, which could limit supply for other customers.
