Samsung plans $71.7b shareholder return: report

Samsung Electronics is set to announce later in August a shareholder return plan worth more than 100 trillion won, or about US$71.75 billion, according to a report.

The South Korean memory-chip maker plans to share AI-driven chip profits with shareholders.

A report said Samsung’s board will meet at the end of August to approve the plan, which would include a special dividend.

It said Samsung would spend 50% of its free cash flow on the program.

On August 19, local rival SK hynix, announced a 40 trillion won (US$28.4 billion) share buyback and cancellation plan.

It also said it would allocate more than 50% of free cash flow generated between 2025 and 2027 to shareholder returns.

The move also comes as shareholders across South Korea’s memory-chip sector have called for bigger payouts as AI-driven earnings boost cash generation at Samsung and SK hynix.
