Samsung plans $1.5b Vietnam chip testing plant
Samsung plans to invest 39 trillion dong, or about US$1.5 billion, in Vietnam for what would be its first chip testing plant in the country, according to a proposal.
Construction is already under way in Thai Nguyen province, about 60 km north of Hanoi, and operations are set to begin in November 2027.
The plant, next to Samsung’s smartphone and tablet complex, would focus on legacy memory chips.
It would have an annual capacity of 153.3 billion gigabits of dynamic random-access memory, or DRAM, and 255.6 billion gigabits of NAND memory, the proposal said.
Vietnamese authorities approved the investment in March, and Samsung said in the document it may reinvest profits from the project, “if any,” up to about US$2.5 billion for a potential second factory.
The project expands Samsung’s footprint in Vietnam. The South Korean company is already the country’s largest foreign investor, with more than US$23 billion committed across multiple facilities, including manufacturing in Thai Nguyen.
It also adds to Vietnam’s semiconductor back-end industry, where Intel, Amkor Technology, and Hana Micron already operate.
Demand driven by AI has tightened the memory chip market. IDC said DRAM and NAND prices have risen sharply as producers shift capacity toward AI-focused memory, constraining supply for smartphones, laptops, and automobiles.
