Samsung nears Texas fab start for Tesla AI chips
Samsung Electronics will hold an equipment installation ceremony on April 24 at its Taylor foundry in Texas as the plant nears operations to make Tesla AI chips with its 2-nanometer process.
Samsung broke ground on the US$17 billion fab in November 2022 but delayed its planned October 2024 launch after it struggled to secure orders.
Preparations accelerated after Samsung won a US$16.5 billion Tesla contract in July 2025 to make AI5 and AI6 chips for self-driving systems.
Tesla had taped out AI5, which means the design was complete and ready for mass production, said Elon Musk on April 15.
