Samsung looks to AI to revive consumer business
Samsung Electronics held strategy meetings in Suwon, South Korea. Executive discussed to revive the company’s consumer business through wider AI adoption and exits from lower-margin markets.
Samsung’s Device eXperience division includes mobile, visual display, and digital appliances.
In the first quarter, Samsung’s chip division generated 53.7 trillion won (US$35.4 billion) of the group’s record 57.2 trillion won (US$37.8 billion) in operating profit. Meanwhile profit at the DX division fell to 3 trillion won (US$1.98 billion) from 4.7 trillion won (US$3.1 billion) a year earlier.
Samsung stopped selling TVs and home appliances in mainland China in May. The company cited intensifying local competition from local brands. Its China operations will continue through manufacturing, research and development, mobile sales, research, and after-sales service.
The shift comes as AI data-center demand has pushed up memory prices. On June 12, Samsung also began allowing DX employees to use ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The move reversed a 2023 decision to restrict use of generative AI tools after staff misuse.
