Samsung, LG stocks jump on Nvidia AI partnership bets
Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and other South Korean tech stocks rose on June 1 as investors bet Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s expected meetings with local executives could lead to AI and robotics partnerships.
Huang is expected to visit South Korea later this week for meetings with LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and other executives.
Nvidia also plans a partner event at Computex in Taipei with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker.
Samsung rose 9.5%, while LG Electronics, a South Korean home appliance and TV maker expanding into robotics, jumped 28%.
The gains came after Samsung said on May 30 that it had started shipping samples of its latest high-bandwidth memory chip to customers such as Nvidia.
A separate report said Samsung recently passed tests for Nvidia’s 12-layer high-bandwidth memory 3E chips, but would begin as Nvidia’s third supplier behind SK hynix and Micron with limited volumes.
LG is also set to hold 51% of Bear Robotics after exercising a call option, making the robotics company a subsidiary.
Analysts said Samsung’s progress with Nvidia could add pricing pressure if it discounts chips to gain market share, while the US restrictions on high-bandwidth memory exports to China may still limit some sales.
