Samsung leads in AI capability among South Korean firms: report

Samsung Electronics ranked as the most competitive Korean company in AI, according to a report by corporate tracker CEO Score.

The study evaluated firms based on patent registrations, citations, academic performance, and AI workforce recruitment.

Naver and LG Group followed Samsung, with Naver noted for research publications and citations, and LG for patent activity.

Despite their domestic strength, Korean firms lagged behind global tech leaders in publishing AI-related papers.

Alphabet led with 820 publications in the world’s top three journals, followed by Microsoft with 414, and Meta Platforms Inc. with 385.

Samsung placed 12th globally with 59 papers, while Naver and LG ranked 30th and 40th.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung’s AI strategy reflects its historical hardware-first innovation approach

  • Samsung’s strong patent performance but weak academic publishing (59 publications vs Google’s 820) mirrors its long-standing focus on manufacturing breakthroughs rather than theoretical research 1.
  • This pattern dates back to the 1990s when Samsung invested 120 billion won to develop the world’s first 256-mega DRAM semiconductor in 1994, becoming the largest memory chip producer globally through product innovation rather than academic research 2.
  • The company has historically gained technological expertise through joint ventures with firms like Sanyo and NEC, combined with heavy R&D investment in tangible products, rather than publishing research papers 3.
  • Samsung’s vertical integration strategy, which allowed it to control production processes and reduce costs in semiconductors, appears to be influencing its AI development approach as well 3.

The academic publication gap reveals different competitive strategies in AI development

  • Google’s 820 AI publications compared to Samsung’s 59 reflects fundamentally different business models – platform-based companies like Google need academic credibility to attract talent and validate their AI platforms, while hardware companies like Samsung prioritize patents for manufacturing advantages 1.
  • Samsung’s market capitalization of $290 billion compared to Apple’s $3.54 trillion suggests that despite strong patent portfolios, the market values platform and software-centric AI strategies more highly than hardware-focused approaches 4.
