Samsung joins XR Headset race to take on Apple, Meta

Samsung Electronics will unveil its new extended reality (XR) headset, project Moohan, at a Galaxy Unpacked event on October 22.

The device, jointly developed with Google and Qualcomm, is positioned to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest headsets.

Project Moohan uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and features dual 4K micro-OLED displays with a combined 29 million pixels.

Weighing 545 grams, it is lighter than Apple’s Vision Pro but heavier than Meta’s Quest 3.

Samsung plans to price the headset at around US$1,800, with about 100,000 units to be available through official online channels.

The headset supports multimodal AI features in collaboration with Google, including contextual awareness, voice and gesture recognition, hand and eye tracking, and runs native Samsung and Google apps in XR mode as well as standard Android apps.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung’s 100,000-unit launch depends on Sony’s cautious OLED supply

  • Samsung plans about 100,000 Project Moohan units at launch with Sony supplying OLEDoS microdisplays. Reports cite 1.3-inch panels near 3,800 ppi 1. Apple’s Vision Pro also uses Sony OLEDoS 1.
  • Sony has kept OLEDoS output tight and turned down Apple requests to ramp 1. This bottleneck could cap volumes past the first run even if demand jumps.
  • A second source via Samsung Display is under review for 2026 mass production, which would steady supply if the headset sells well, though it arrives after launch 21.
  • Price lands near $1,800, and pressure could rise if it must chase Meta’s $499 Quest 3 before Samsung Display capacity ramps 3.
