Samsung to invest $17.3b in South Korea chip expansion
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong said Samsung Group would invest 26.6 trillion won (US$17.3 billion) in South Korea, including 20.3 trillion won (US$13.2 billion) for a semiconductor cluster in the Seoul metropolitan area across Pyeongtaek and Yongin.
Samsung also earmarked 4.3 trillion won (US$2.76 billion) for the Honam region, including 4 trillion won (US$2.6 billion) for a semiconductor wafer fabrication plant and other projects in Gwangju.
The company also allocated 1.4 trillion won (US$910 million) for the Chungcheong region, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), display, battery, and substrate projects, and 600 billion won (US$390 million) for the Yeongnam region, covering robotics, smartphones, batteries, chip substrates, and shipbuilding.
The announcement came as South Korea’s government unveiled a blueprint for semiconductor, AI data center, and physical AI projects, with pledged support for power, water, infrastructure, and regulation.
It was unclear how much of Samsung’s domestic investment represented new spending rather than previously announced plans.
The focus on Pyeongtaek and Yongin reflects their central role in South Korea’s chip industry, even as the government said those sites had reached capacity limits and pushed for new regional bases.
Samsung’s HBM-related spending also comes as it trails SK hynix in AI memory, with one market estimate putting SK hynix at 62% of the HBM market in Q2 2025, versus Samsung’s 17%.
