Samsung, Hyundai unveil major investments to boost S Korea operations

Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor have announced new investment plans in South Korea amid concerns that US-bound investments could reduce domestic manufacturing.

Samsung said it will add a chip production line at its Pyeongtaek plant, as part of a planned 450 trillion won (US$311 billion) investment over five years, responding to rising demand for AI and memory chips.

Hyundai Motor Group announced domestic investments totaling 125.2 trillion won (US$86 billion) between 2026 and 2030.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung raised concerns about shrinking local investment following a US trade deal that included a South Korean pledge to invest US$350 billion in US strategic sectors.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung’s P5 restart signals High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) priority, not broad DRAM relief

  • Samsung will restart P5 construction in October 2025. Production targets late 2027 with HBM4 on its “1c” dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) node, a 10-nanometer-class generation, not Double Data Rate 4 (DDR4) that would ease shortages 1.
  • P4 now serves as a 1c DRAM base. Equipment is going in, and yields near 70% support an early HBM4 ramp 2.
  • DRAM supply stays tight through 2026 as makers favor High Bandwidth Memory over general-purpose chips 1. P5 shifted to three stories with six cleanrooms for phased HBM and contract chip manufacturing activation, not a fast build of conventional DRAM 2.

Energy infrastructure providers can target South Korea’s semiconductor buildouts

  • Samsung’s Pyeongtaek expansion and Hyundai Motor Group’s 125.2 trillion won domestic spend through 2030 will strain power and water near manufacturing hubs.
  • Korea Water Resources Corporation is the state water utility. It put out tenders for traffic impact assessments for water supply at the Yongin Semiconductor Industrial Complex, a planned chip cluster south of Seoul 3.
  • Industrial energy management firms can pitch cogeneration, or combined heat and power. Korea District Heating Technology tendered basic design services for cogeneration power plants at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster 4. On-site generation plus energy storage system (ESS) vendors can chase contracts as SK Hynix lifts the Yongin floor area ratio (FAR) to 490% with building height at 150 meters for power-hungry facilities 5.
