Samsung hikes memory chip prices as shortage worsens: sources

Samsung Electronics has raised prices for certain memory chips by up to 60% compared to September, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The South Korean company, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, increased contract prices for 32GB DDR5 modules to US$239 in November from US$149 in September.

Prices for 16GB and 128GB DDR5 modules also rose by about 50%, reaching US$135 and US$1,194, while 64GB and 96GB modules climbed by more than 30%, said Tobey Gonnerman, president of semiconductor distributor Fusion Worldwide.

DDR memory chips are commonly used in servers, computers, and other electronic devices.

The price hikes come amid a global shortage driven by increased demand for AI data centers, leading to higher costs for server builders and electronics manufacturers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

DDR5 price surge stems from a structural supply-demand gap through 2026

  • Samsung lifted DDR5 (the latest generation of dynamic random-access memory, or DRAM) prices by 60% 1. TrendForce lifted its Q4 2025 conventional DRAM view to 18–23% from 8–13% on tight supply and cloud buildouts 1.
  • Adding 10,000 wafers per month of advanced DDR5 capacity needs about $10 billion. Equipment lead times run long, so ramps stay slow 2.
  • In Q2 2025, High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) 3e sold for over four times DDR5 1. As prices converge, DDR5 profitability is set to top HBM3e in Q1 2026, which can shift supplier focus to server DDR5 1.
  • Even so, new DRAM capacity will take years to arrive, which keeps prices elevated into 2026 3.

Server builders should evaluate CXL memory expansion to reduce exposure to DDR5 price volatility

  • Compute Express Link (CXL) lets CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators pool and expand memory 4. Version 3.1 links up to 4,096 hosts in an any-to-any topology 4.
  • Vendors demoed hardware-accelerated memory compression in CXL tiers at the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2025, and OCP published specifications for compressed CXL memory to cut cost while raising capacity for hyperscale workloads 5.
  • The CXL market could reach $16 billion by 2028 4. CPU vendors are adding CXL features, so the tech is going mainstream 4.
  • Server builders can hedge DDR5 swings with CXL memory tiering and compression 5.
