Samsung hikes device prices as AI drives costs higher

Samsung Electronics has raised prices for the Galaxy S25 Edge, higher-capacity Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 models released last year, and some Galaxy Tab tablets, with phone prices up 100,000 to 200,000 won (US$130) and tablet prices up 30,000 to 130,000 won (US$86).

The move is unusual because Samsung usually changes prices when launching new devices rather than for models already on sale, and it comes as memory and other component costs rise amid stronger AI infrastructure demand and wider supply chain pressure.

Suppliers including STMicroelectronics, Murata Manufacturing, and Kingboard Laminates Group have announced higher prices, while other manufacturers are expected to follow with similar increases.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Cost pressure behind Samsung’s price hike goes beyond memory chips

  • Rising costs also come from printed circuit boards (PCBs). Gold and copper-clad laminate (CCL), a fiberglass-and-resin sheet used to make circuit boards, can account for nearly half of raw material spending 1.
  • In South Korea, potassium gold cyanide, a gold-plating chemical used in electronics substrates, nearly doubled from 2023 levels by the third quarter of 2025 1.
  • During that quarter, electronics makers also faced CCL purchase costs up in the low-to-mid-10% range versus the prior year, adding strain to manufacturing budgets 1.

AI demand for components tightens supply and raises costs across consumer electronics

  • Strong demand for AI hardware has led memory suppliers to steer more capacity toward enterprise products. TrendForce ties this shift to AI infrastructure demand 2.
  • TrendForce expects these capacity moves, plus shortages, to keep pushing contract prices higher over time 2.
  • Some consumer memory has dipped at retail in the near term. Taiwan-based suppliers quoted by TrendForce said contract rates from large memory makers stayed completely stable 3.
  • Those supply and cost pressures can flow through to consumer electronics brands, including Samsung. Similar increases have also come from Dell, HP, and Sony.
