Samsung faces tough choice over Stargate AI partnership

Samsung is considering joining The Stargate Project, a US$500 billion AI infrastructure initiative led by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle.

A Feb. 4 meeting in Seoul between SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-Yong signaled potential collaboration.

Samsung’s AI chip advancements could make it a key player, but the project requires heavy investment, adding to its record US$42.3 billion capex in 2024.

Skepticism remains over SoftBank’s ability to fund the project, potential delays, and competition from Nvidia and TSMC in AI chip supply.

The project aligns with US AI strategy, pressuring Samsung to join.
