Samsung eyes highest Q3 profit since 2022 on AI memory chip surge
Samsung Electronics is expected to report its highest Q3 profit since 2022, with analysts projecting an operating profit of 10.1 trillion won (US$7.1 billion) for July-September, up 10% year-on-year.
The company, the world’s largest memory chip maker, saw profit growth mainly from higher conventional memory chip prices as server customers rebuilt inventories.
Analysts noted that while demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips was driven by AI and server investments, Samsung’s delay in supplying its latest HBM3E chips to Nvidia limited its gains.
Prices for certain DRAM chips surged 171.8% year-on-year in Q3, according to TrendForce.
Samsung’s shares rose over 43% following its announcement of a chip supply deal with Tesla in July, and the company recently announced an AI chip partnership with OpenAI.
Samsung will announce its Q3 estimates on October 14, with full results later this month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung’s late HBM3E pass strains its AI memory shift
- Samsung cleared Nvidia’s tests for 12-layer High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) 3E 18 months after development finished, yet shipments land in 2026 because SK hynix and Micron hold Nvidia’s orders 1. (Qualification tests are the customer validation checks chip buyers require before volume shipments.)
- Capacity shifts from Double Data Rate 4 (DDR4) to Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) and HBM, with DDR4 cut to 20% of 2025 levels in 2026 2. HBM yields trail rivals 3. DRAM prices jumped 171.8% year over year in Q3 2025, per TrendForce, so the HBM move hurts as lines shrink before HBM volume arrives.
- China exposure adds risk 3. U.S. rules limit advanced sales there, while rivals grow elsewhere.
