Samsung Electronics shares flat as strike fears grow

Samsung Electronics shares closed nearly flat on May 20 after government-led mediation with its largest union collapsed.

The company sought more time to review a proposal the union had accepted, leaving the chipmaker facing a full strike from May 21.

The stock ended at 276,000 won (US$180), up 0.18%, after falling as much as 4.36% earlier when news of the failed talks emerged.

Samsung shares have risen 65.07%, trailing South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix at 116.23%, as investors weighed strike risks and a bonus dispute.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Legal rulings and rival bonuses shape Samsung’s strike

  • A court injunction narrowed the union’s room to act before the strike, requiring normal staffing for safety, facility protection, and product quality 1.
  • The order also blocks union members and leaders from occupying or locking facilities or obstructing workers. Violations could bring a daily fine of 100 million won (US$74,000) 1.
  • Bonuses sit at the center of the dispute. Samsung offered a one-time payment, while rival SK hynix was linked to larger payouts, though the figures were not independently confirmed in the source material provided here 1.
  • Before the planned walkout, Samsung began adjusting chip output. Steps under review included a “warm-down” process and fewer new wafer inputs to limit damage from a stoppage 2.

A Samsung slowdown could ripple through the chip sector

  • Any hit to Samsung’s production could affect the global semiconductor supply chain. The company was also weighing a shift toward higher-margin products 2.
  • On the day mediation collapsed, Chinese chip stocks jumped. SMIC, China’s largest contract chip manufacturer, rose 10.07%. Hua Hong Semiconductor, another Chinese contract chip manufacturer, gained 17.98% 3.
  • That move tracked company forecasts for second-quarter revenue growth, tied to strong AI demand and a memory supply crunch 4.
  • Still, the rebound followed a weak period. Hua Hong Semiconductor’s first-quarter 2025 net income fell 88.1% from a year earlier, so the recent rise came off a low base 5.
