Samsung Electronics plans $1.7b share buyback for employees

Samsung Electronics will buy back 2.5 trillion won (US$1.7 billion) of its own shares to use for employee and executive compensation.

The company said it will make the purchases on the stock market from January 8 to April 7, 2026.

Samsung introduced this performance-linked compensation scheme in October 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung buyback shifts from cancellation to compensation

  • The company shifted from canceling shares to using repurchases for pay. Of the KRW 10 trillion plan from November 2024, KRW 8.4 trillion went to cancellations, while the new KRW 2.5 trillion slice goes fully to grants 1.
  • Under the Performance Stock Units (PSU) plan adopted in October 2025, which differs from the cash-based Overall Performance Incentive (OPI), management expects the KRW 1.6 trillion already set for pay to run out by 2027 1. More purchases will be needed for PSU grants after 2028 1. Using treasury shares instead of issuing new shares avoids dilution (reducing existing shareholders’ ownership percentage) but trims the price boost from cancellations.

Traders can arbitrage Samsung’s three-month buyback window

  • From January 8 to April 7, the buyback sets a 90-day price backstop, and in July to September 2025 the company bought 49.7 million common shares at KRW 70,594 on average via Samsung Securities, Shinhan Securities, and KB Securities 23. Tracking consignment brokers helps time daily flow 3.
  • Quant desks can build trades around daily limits set by a formula using 10% of target shares, average daily volume, and 1% of total issued shares 3. Bid support grows in thin sessions.
  • Data vendors can watch Korea Exchange filings in real time and alert clients when buying speeds up or pauses. The stock rose over 60% from November 2024 to September 2025, while the Kospi gained 45% 4.
