Samsung Electronics jumps 6.7% as wage talks resume
Samsung Electronics shares rose as much as 6.7% in Seoul after wage talks resumed on May 18 with its largest labor union.
The union has threatened an 18-day strike starting May 21 if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.
The potential walkout has raised concerns over supplies from the world’s largest memory chipmaker.
Workers want Samsung to remove a bonus cap and set bonuses at 15% of operating profit.
Meanwhile, Samsung has offered 10% plus a one-time payment and says the union’s proposal may not be sustainable.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A rival’s 2025 deal helped spark the dispute
- SK hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker, agreed in 2025 to put 10% of its annual operating profit into a performance bonus pool. That deal raised expectations among Samsung workers 1.
- Samsung union members want a similar system because their bonuses trail those at SK hynix 2.
- They also want the bonus cap removed. Samsung’s Overall Performance Incentive (OPI) now tops out at 50% of annual salary 3.
The outcome could reshape Korea’s wider debate on profit sharing and investment
- The standoff has grown into a national economic issue, leading South Korea’s prime minister to call an emergency meeting 4.
- Semiconductors made up 37% of the country’s exports in April. Officials are weighing an emergency arbitration order that would block industrial action for 30 days. South Korea has used that power only four times 1.
- A long walkout could cost about 1 trillion won, or US$671 million, a day in factory shutdowns, based on a professor’s estimate 5.
- If the union wins, other South Korean companies could face pressure to tie pay to operating profit. Critics say that could pull money away from long-term research and development and toward short-term pay 6.
