Samsung Electronics chairman tops Korea’s stock-rich list

Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae-yong remains South Korea’s wealthiest individual in terms of stock holdings, according to new data from CEO Score.

The combined stock value of the top 100 shareholders in listed Korean companies reached 177.2 trillion won (US$119.6 billion) as of December 20, up 64.6% from a year earlier.

Lee’s equity stake rose to 23.4 trillion won (US$15.9 billion), nearly double last year’s amount, led by gains in Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Life Insurance.

Lee is expected to receive an additional 1.06% stake in Samsung C&T from his mother, Hong Ra-hee, next month.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Cross-holdings underpin Lee family influence at Samsung

  • Lee Jae-yong’s 23.4 trillion won in shares 1 does not explain his sway over Samsung Electronics, which stems from cross-holdings where Samsung C&T and Samsung Life Insurance own stakes in the electronics company 2.
  • An expected 1.06% stake in Samsung C&T from his mother 1 matters because it lifts his leverage through that affiliate 2.
  • This setup lets the family guide the group despite modest direct ownership, shaping strategy more than headline share values 2.

Regulatory and accounting reviews could affect Samsung Life’s holdings

  • Korean regulators are rethinking Samsung Life Insurance’s accounting for participating policyholders’ interests tied to gains on the electronics maker’s shares, and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) may scrap this “deviant accounting” exception 3.
  • The Insurance Business Act caps an insurer’s stake in another insurer at 15% unless it is a subsidiary, and Samsung Life recently won Financial Services Commission (FSC) approval to exceed that limit when incorporating Samsung Fire & Marine 4.
  • Possible rule changes have raised expectations that Samsung Life may pare its Samsung Electronics stake, which could spark block trades, large negotiated share sales typically done off-exchange, and market swings 5.
