Samsung Electro-Mechanics stock jumps on AI demand
Samsung Electro-Mechanics shares rise 93.37% as investors focused on AI server demand for its FC-BGA substrates and MLCCs.
The stock outpaced the Kospi’s 28.17% rise and the electronics sub-index’s 31.42% gain over the same period.
The company makes packaging boards that connect AI chips to mainboards and MLCCs that stabilize power delivery, two components facing tight supply as Nvidia, Google, Amazon, and Apple expand AI infrastructure.
The company said that FC-BGA demand was more than 50% above current capacity, and the company is investing about US$1.2 billion at its Vietnam plant to add AI-related FC-BGA output.
Analysts expect supply shortage to continue this year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung is spending big to catch up in Vietnam
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to spend US$1.2 billion in Vietnam as it tries to gain ground in high-end substrates, a market where it arrived later than rivals 1.
- Ibiden, Shinko Electric, and Unimicron hold more than 70% of the flip-chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) substrate market. These packaging boards connect chips to mainboards 1.
- Northern Vietnam fits that plan because Samsung already has a large base there. The region sits near China’s supply chains and has skilled workers 2.
- Samsung is also preparing a third factory in the Philippines to raise output of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), parts that help keep power delivery stable 1.
AI demand is giving component suppliers more sway
- Heavy demand for AI hardware is making specialized component suppliers more important. Their parts can slow data center buildouts for large tech groups 3.
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it won an Nvidia deal for FC-BGA used in the Grok3 Language Processing Unit (LPU) chip. It expects mass production in the second quarter 1.
- It is also adding customers such as Broadcom, Google, Amazon and Apple. Those companies are building application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) 1.
- Short supply has already pushed up prices for MLCCs from large producers. That means the cost of AI infrastructure is rising across the sector 4.
