Samsung earnings lift group market cap near $1t

Samsung Group’s 17 listed affiliates reached a combined market value of about 1,600 trillion won (US$1.08 trillion), in South Korea.

The gain followed record preliminary first-quarter earnings from Samsung Electronics, driven by strong AI-related semiconductor demand.

Exchange data showed the group made up 39.65% of the combined value of the Kospi, Kosdaq, and Konex markets, while Samsung Electronics alone was worth about 1,246 trillion won (US$835 billion) after its shares rose 7.12% to 210,500 won (US$140).

Samsung Electronics said preliminary Q1 operating profit rose 755% year-on-year to 57.2 trillion won (US$38.3 billion), and revenue rose 68.1% to 133 trillion won (US$89.1 billion).

It was the first time quarterly revenue topped 100 trillion won (US$67 billion) and operating profit passed 50 trillion won (US$33.5 billion).

Analysts expect the chip upcycle to continue this year as AI demand lifts memory prices.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Samsung’s AI boom papers over smartphone struggles

  • Samsung Electronics’ record profit came mostly from Device Solutions (DS), its chip unit, helped by strong demand for AI memory chips 1.
  • That result contrasts with Mobile Experience (MX), which designs and sells smartphones and tablets, where momentum has been weaker 1.
  • In the prior quarter, DS sales rose 33% while MX operating profit dropped more than 45% quarter on quarter, tied to tough competition and weaker lift from recent phone launches 1.
  • Depending so heavily on the cyclical semiconductor business leaves Samsung exposed even when headline earnings look strong 1.

The AI memory boom creates ripple effects far beyond Samsung’s bottom line

  • Samsung’s move toward high-margin High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), an advanced type of memory used in AI servers, has added to a wider supply squeeze that pushes up component costs for PC and mobile device makers worldwide 1.
  • Higher memory prices help the chip business yet are expected to raise costs for Samsung’s smartphone and display units in coming periods 1.
  • Extra cash from the chip upswing supported record half-year venture spending of more than US$120 million across AI, robotics, and digital health, plus acquisitions and deal work in areas including digital health 2.
  • This spending pattern suggests Samsung Group is using memory-chip gains to back longer-term growth bets in AI, robotics, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and digital health 2.
