Samsung completes Tesla AI5 chip design

Samsung Electronics has completed its version of Tesla’s AI5 chip design for self-driving systems, according to industry officials.

Production at its foundry fab in Taylor, Texas, is set to begin soon,

A LinkedIn post later deleted by Samsung Foundry principal engineer James Kim said “the Tesla-Samsung AI5 chip has reached tape-out” and was scheduled to be manufactured at the Taylor fab using Samsung’s 2-nanometer process.

Tape-out means a chip design has been finalized and handed over for manufacturing.

In April, Elon Musk said on X that Tesla’s AI5 team had taped out the chip’s design to Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for foundry manufacturing.

The AI5 chip would follow Tesla’s current AI4 self-driving computer, which is built on Samsung’s 7nm process.
