Samsung builds next-gen mobile storage for AI phones

Samsung said on June 23 it had developed what it described as the industry’s first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 mobile storage product. The launch comes  as device makers shift more AI processing onto phones and other consumer devices.

The South Korean company said the product uses JEDEC’s latest embedded memory interface standard.

Samsung said those speeds are each more than 2x as fast as its previous UFS 4.1 standard.

It added that the package measures 7.5 mm by 13 mm by 0.9 mm, is 16.7% smaller than its predecessor. The new solution improves power efficiency by more than 40% compared with Samsung’s UFS 4.1 solution. It will be offered in capacities of up to 1 terabyte.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter, with the product aimed at smartphones, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices.
