Samsung backs Kairos with up to $100m for Google reactor
Samsung C&T, the engineering and construction arm of South Korea’s Samsung Group, will provide up to US$100 million to US nuclear startup Kairos Power through an equity investment and in-kind engineering services.
The investment includes US$70 million in equity.
Kairos Power has selected Samsung C&T to help build a 50-megawatt reactor project in Tennessee for Google by 2030.
Kairos is developing its first power-producing reactors in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Hermes 1 is the demonstration reactor. Output from Hermes 2, which Kairos has described as its first commercial-scale unit, is expected to count toward the first 50 megawatts under its Google deal.
Kairos’ reactor design uses molten salt as a coolant instead of water, and the company still needs more approvals before it can load fuel and begin operations.
Samsung C&T has partnered on other nuclear projects, including small modular reactor work.
The Google agreement, signed in 2024, covers 500 megawatts of nuclear power as AI data center demand rises.
