Sam Altman’s crypto project launches in the US

World, a human verification cryptocurrency initiative supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has launched in the US.

The rollout will begin in six cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco.

The initiative aims to distinguish humans from AI-generated entities by creating a World ID.

Users who verify their identity will earn WLD tokens as part of the initiative.

While there have been privacy concerns in other regions, World assures that biometric data is not stored, minimizing risks.

World will also introduce a Visa card for spending WLD tokens and other digital assets.

The card, linked to the World App wallet, is expected to launch later this year in the US.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ World’s launch aligns with a pivotal shift in U.S. crypto regulation

World’s U.S. expansion comes at an opportune moment as the regulatory landscape has dramatically shifted under the second Trump administration.

The SEC has established a Crypto Task Force and paused litigation against major crypto firms, signaling a more supportive environment for digital asset companies 1.

This timing is strategic, as the FDIC recently issued new guidance allowing banks to engage in crypto-related activities without prior approval, removing significant barriers that previously existed 2.

The project’s rollout in six U.S. cities (Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco) leverages this regulatory tailwind, potentially accelerating adoption in a market that was previously more restrictive.

This regulatory shift helps explain why World is confidently expanding its suite of services to include a Visa card and Kalshi prediction market access, initiatives that might have faced greater scrutiny under previous regulatory frameworks.
