Sam Altman to visit India amid legal challenges: sources

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is reportedly planning to visit India next week, marking his first trip to the country in two years.

Sources indicate that Altman is expected to arrive in New Delhi on Feb. 5 and may meet with government officials. However, the final itinerary has not been confirmed and could change.

India is OpenAI’s second-largest market by user numbers, following the US.

Altman’s last visit in 2023 involved a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss AI’s role in India’s tech ecosystem.

Since then, OpenAI has encountered legal challenges in India, including a copyright lawsuit from news agency ANI and other plaintiffs.

OpenAI defends its use of publicly available data under fair use principles and disputes the jurisdiction on Indian courts.
