Sam Altman says he spoke to Microsoft CEO on partnership

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the future of the company’s partnership with Microsoft in a podcast with the New York Times.

He said he spoke with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on June 24, about the ongoing collaboration.

Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, and earlier reports from the Wall Street Journal noted that both companies are negotiating changes to Microsoft’s investment terms, including its future equity stake.

The Financial Times added that talks could pause if key issues like stake size aren’t resolved.

Altman admitted there are some tensions but said the partnership has been beneficial for both sides.

“In any deep partnership, there are points of tension, but it has been beneficial for both companies.”

Neither company has commented on the talks.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The evolution from partnership to “coopetition” complicates negotiations

The tension in Microsoft-OpenAI talks reflects their evolving relationship from pure partnership to simultaneous collaboration and competition.

Microsoft’s recent annual report explicitly acknowledges OpenAI as a direct competitor in search and news advertising, despite their ongoing strategic alliance 1.

This “coopetition” dynamic emerged gradually since their initial 2019 partnership, with OpenAI launching services that overlap with Microsoft’s offerings while still powering Microsoft products 2.

The relationship has shifted significantly since Microsoft’s initial $1 billion investment in 2019, which positioned Microsoft as OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider, to now where both pursue some competing interests 3.

Such complexity explains Altman’s careful language about “points of tension” within an otherwise beneficial relationship, as both companies navigate their intertwined futures while maintaining independent strategic objectives.
